Though we have just met for about two weeks or so, I guess the chemistry we have among one another were not bad and everyone seems happy with one another . I am glad to know these new friends and hope to get to know everyone . We are all made up of different shapes, sizes, capacities and volumes . It makes life interesting . All of them are talented in their own ways . It's quite a good thing to have like-minded people together . At least we have a common interest : Art !
Even though I am unskilled in art, but art possessed a kind of attraction to me, it is like how magnets are attracted to each other. The kind of art I am drawn to are origami, iris folding and frottage.
Origami seems ironic, but the truth is a simple medium such as a piece of paper, can be made into arrays of creations. The flexibility of papers amazes me, for it can be made into soft tender beauties like flowers and spirals, yet it also can be sculpted into solid like structures, such as castles, cottages and modular. Of the many creations are snowflakes, flowers, stars, castle, cottages, dragons, cartoon characters, modular and several other things.
Even though it can be made into a variety of things, skills are also required for such creations, and time is required to hone the skill.
Similarly for iris folding, its basic medium is paper. Its swirling effect is specially beautiful if two contrasting colours are used to amplify the swirl effect. Of all the cards I have made for friends and family members, iris folding and origami often bring the joy of amazement to them.
Such beauty and amazement is portrayable in this medium of paper sculpting, which written words often fails to make the amazement visible. Which is also why art is attractive to me.
Art is also a platform of expression, which helps to bring the daily neglected beauty of nature to a more visible form. It is what frottage is able to do.
For example, frottage can capture the texture and patterns of leaves with different colours. Leaves gives me a peaceful feeling, peaceful colour, like light purple amplify that feeling. With several copies of the leaves, I created flowers, which exudes a sense of peace.
Going for art exhibitions are enjoyable experiences for me, as it feels like time has come to a standstill and it broadens my perspectives. For the exhibits have captured the essence of people’s thoughts and perception in the form of drawings, sculptures, photography and even multi-media. Going to exhibitions feel like images of diary coming to life.
One of the exhibits that left a deep impression on me was the wire sculpture, title ‘Inside’. It involves a cage that houses people who are in their usual activity of life. The people in the cage do not exhibit any sense of captivity, but to outsiders like us, these people are trapped. The sculpture is portraying people who had adapted to the limitations and restrictions and that had blinded them to be aware of what is missing in their lives.
This sculpture brings me to relate to those who spent decades of their lives for their dedication in working for money to earn a livelihood, while neglecting their beloved families and friends. Not only that, this mentality of ‘life is all about making money’ also instill greed and materialism. Which is an apparent trend in our society.
Even though I am not a professional artist, being able to appreciate art allows me to appreciate life better. I hope others will adopt such appreciation to arts as well.
I was very impressed with this particular course that I am attending (ICT, Information and Communication Technology ) . And so looking forward to it. Hope that I will still be assigned to this class.
Some projects in progress
1. Arts Arcade (AA ) : A travelogue project about the art amusements we have been to.
2. Paintings Accompanying Words : Exploring the relationship between paintings and poems ; images and words.
But the real important things at hand are piling up.
I also need to clear my tables, my room .
Here are 7 keys to great paintings for all inspiring artists , artist students , art teachers or art lovers .
By Jane R. Hofstetter . It is written in 7 stanzas . Before that, a senior artist once told me that there are only two keys to a good painting : Colour and Composition. Some food for thoughts !
Father's Day has just gone by last sunday. How did you celebrate father's day ? Here's something interesting from Happy Slip about " Love so Grand" giving an interesting idea on how to celebrate this special occasion. ( Please pause the music at the right hand column . And click on HD of this vid to enjoy high quality image )
Father's Day for me has always been a normal day because my dear father doesn't like to celebrate, same goes for his birthdays. He thinks that one does not need to appreciate father just on father's day . So father's day is as quiet as any normal days. However things are going better and creative !
An idea came on father's day to get my father something he will appreciate. Here it is !
A mini pot of plant ( not sure of the name ) to add to his collection. I don't think he will reject it this time.
And yes he accepted ! :)
Salute to all fathers who have sacrificed their time for their children !
please switch off the music at the right hand column first before listening to this vid. Switch off by clicking the "pause" icon that is next to the CD the hiphop lady is holding
This guy played much better. Though I can't play as well as him yet, I will try to get better the next time. For now, hope you will enjoy the music lyrics as much as I do.
It was great receiving so many Christmas Presents ! Yesterday I had a wonderful and beautiful Christmas Celebration , in church and was also invited to a dinner during the night time, just next door. But this year's Christmas is different. Like what Nicholas Jonas sang about in "A Christmas Prayer " . I think I have also sang this song umpteen times already during this season.
Wait for my photos to be uploaded !
And a must-sing song dedicated to all love ones.
"Silent Night"
May all readers receive this peace for your new coming year !
Silent night holy night All is calm all is bright Round yon virgin mother and Child Holy infant so tender and mild Sleep in heavenly peace Sleep in heavenly peace
Silent night holy night Son of God love's pure light Radiant beams from thy holy face With the dawn of grace Jesus Lord at Thy birth Jesus Lord at Thy birth
Silent night holy night All is calm all is bright Round yon virgin mother and Child Holy infant so tender and mild Sleep in heavenly peace Sleep in heavenly peace Sleep in heavenly peace Win Nie
Do you have any best friend ? Or, do you have any friend who is so faithful that will always stay by your side no matter what ?
Do you have a friend who can share your burden, even if things seem really bad ?
Today someone said to me, "You are a true friend indeed." Thank you.
However, there are many times when we will fail being a true friend . We may fail because we arrived late at the most crucial time, say something that is insensitive to others or make wrong judgements against others.
One thing I will always remember this week is this old hymn "What a Friend we have in Jesus ". Ive only known this song for the first time during the hospital visit , when his daughter said that it was his daddy's favourite song. We sang many songs but I think this is one of the songs that we will always remember.
Dedicating this song to his family and friends who attended the funeral/ wake. Be encouraged !
What a previlege to carry everything to God in prayer.
Have you got any hair-raising experience in your life ? (no, not scary, but check out below, you will know what i mean as you read on)
Today was an unforgetable day. 21st Dec 08. I shall start it with a more joyous note. check out the photos below :
All smiles : who is that hair stylist behind me ? She is none other than A.N.G.E.L.I.C.A. How do you find my new hair style ? How did she manage to do that to my hair ? With the help of hairspray and her comb ....very stylo. I like it. Haha.. Not bad, I think she can be a great hairstylist if given the opportunity and if she follows her passion all the way ! We shall see a future star hairstylist !
Wow, I can almost imagine walking into her future salon...haha She's got her own style. But I am afraid that those who walk in will have their hair raised just like hers ! haha just joking...
On a serious note..... what was this experience that I was talking about ? When I meant hair-raising, it meant that it takes someone's breath away. Not literally hair-raising......
Today was a indeed a journey well-spent in the hospital. It was a crucial defining moment for someone and his family members at his death-bed. For me, it reminded me of the last day I spent with my mum in the hospital. And now, able to be of support for others.
Perhaps I shouldn't say it is a death-bed. Because by faith, he has crossed over from death to life, by God's grace. He is in a better place. I wonder how my mum is too . :)
John 3 16"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because he has not believed in the name of God's one and only Son. 19This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. 20Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God." I will remember this day, just like how I remember the last defining moments with my mum.
I won't talk much here. But in conclusion, God is good. God is faithful. God is merciful. God hears and God fulfills. His love endures forever. All things may pass away, but His Word will never pass away. He gives and he takes away. Blessed be His Name.
I will always remember the last moment when he opened his mouth and said something.
God hears .
It is sufficient.
Rest in peace now.
Light of the world You stepped down into darkness Opened my eyes let me see Beauty that made this heart adore You Hope of a life spent with You
Here I am to worship Here I am to bow down Here I am to say that You're my God
You're altogether lovely Altogether worthy Altogether wonderful to me
King of all days Oh so highly exalted Glorious in heaven above Humbly You came to the earth You created All for love's sake became poor
I'll never know how much it cost To see my sin upon that cross
Call: Call upon the name of the Lord And be saved Win Nie
13 Dec 08 was the opening of an annual exhibition "Mountains As Non-Mountains".
As the name suggests, it carries a poetic connotation and serves well as the theme for this exhibition . I was glad it went quite okay.
For me, it was a significant event on a personal note- I had to be the MC (emcee ) . Not a big deal , but to me it was special because 22 years ago I wouldn't have the courage to speak publicly. I am glad I got to overcome this "mountain" of my life, that is to be able to speak more comfortably in front of the crowd.
I remember 22 years ago I was in kindergarten 1 and my mum would encourage me to take part in story telling competition in my preschool. I can take part in art competitions but not story telling competition ! Oh no, the thought of story telling in front of so many people frightens me ! Immediately, I told my mum that I did not want to do that. I guess that "wish" of hers were fulfilled through my two brothers, who were more "thick -skin " and daring. I can't do it as naturally as my brother Han did when he was young then. He won the first prize ! Perhaps I was too conscious of myself then.
I guess everyone has their own strengths. I was better ( or, prefered ) in doing something quiet like drawing, art, or to tell my brothers my makeup play stories when we were at home playing together but not in the public eyes of others.
After the emceeing , I received quite a few encouraging feedbacks from others. It naturally makes me feel good and in my heart, I was very thankful to God for his grace in my life. The grace that comes from the transforming power of His love. His grace changes our bad attitudes and enables us to soar like an eagle .
